Short Information: If you are a 12th-pass student with the ambition to serve the nation in uniform, UPSC NDA & NA II 2026 is the most direct pathway to a Permanent Commission in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force — straight after school. The Union Public Service Commission has announced 394 vacancies across six categories: Army (208), Navy Executive Branch (42), Air Force Flying (92), Air Force Ground Duties Technical (18), Air Force Ground Duties Non-Technical (10), and Naval Academy 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme (24). The application window is open from 20 May 2026 to 09 June 2026, with the written exam on 13 September 2026. Both male and female unmarried candidates born between 01 January 2008 and 01 January 2011 are eligible. Even students currently appearing in 12th class can apply — final results are required only at the SSB interview stage. During the 3-year training at NDA, cadets receive a stipend of ₹56,100 per month. After commissioning as a Lieutenant, the basic pay is Level-10 (₹56,100–₹1,77,500) plus Military Service Pay of ₹15,500/month fixed, DA, Transport Allowance, Dress Allowance, free ration, and field area allowances — making this one of the most comprehensive pay-and-perks packages available straight out of school. For Navy and Air Force wings, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at 12th level are mandatory. Army wing needs only a 12th pass in any stream.

Recruitment Note: About National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla

The National Defence Academy, located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra, is one of the world's most prestigious joint-services training academies and a unique institution where future officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force train together under one roof. Established in 1954, NDA is a tri-service academy governed by the Ministry of Defence and is an autonomous institution of national importance. Cadets undergo a rigorous 3-year programme combining academic education, physical training, and military discipline. On completion, Army cadets are awarded B.Sc. / B.A. degrees, while Navy and Air Force cadets earn B.Tech degrees — all from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. NDA has been consistently ranked among the finest military academies globally and has produced several Chiefs of Army Staff, Naval Chiefs, and Air Chiefs. The academy's sprawling campus spans over 7,000 acres, housing academic blocks, parade grounds, firing ranges, swimming pools, sports facilities, and the iconic Sudha Murthy Hall. Admission through the UPSC NDA & NA examination is one of the most competitive selection processes in India.

Recruitment Note: Job Profile — NDA Officer Cadet (Multi-Wing)

The NDA entry is a Permanent Commission pathway — not a short-term contract. Army officers lead platoons of 30–40 soldiers and are responsible for their training, welfare, and operational readiness across diverse terrains including high-altitude, jungle, and desert environments. Naval officers in the Executive Branch navigate warships, manage weapons systems, and conduct maritime operations. Air Force Flying officers pilot fighter jets, transport aircraft, or helicopters, while Ground Duty officers handle Technical maintenance of aircraft systems or Non-Technical administrative and operational support roles. NDA cadets spend 3 years at the Academy gaining inter-service exposure, then proceed to respective service academies (IMA/INA/AFA) for specialised training before commissioning. A career spanning 26 years with time-scale promotions up to Colonel/Captain/Group Captain, followed by selection-based promotions to General rank, makes NDA one of the longest and most structured career pathways in India's public service.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Salary

NDA officer cadets and commissioned officers receive a comprehensive benefits package. 💡 Expert Tip

Most NDA aspirants focus only on the written exam, but the SSB Interview carries equal marks (900 written = 900 SSB). The selection rate at SSB is under 10%, so start building Officer Like Qualities (OLQ) from day one — join NCC, debate clubs, or leadership activities. For Air Force Flying branch, note that CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System) is given only ONCE in a lifetime — if you fail it in this attempt, you can never apply for the Flying branch again through any exam. Candidates with glasses (Habitual Wearers) cannot appear for CPSS at all. For the written exam, Mathematics paper carries 300 marks and is at a higher level than 12th — start with NCERT first and then move to previous NDA papers. Also pre-correct minor medical issues (wax, DNS, overweight) before the Medical Board to avoid last-stage rejection.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the in-hand salary for NDA cadets and commissioned officers?
Ans: During the 3-year NDA training, cadets receive a stipend of ₹56,100/month (Level-10). After commissioning as a Lieutenant, basic pay is ₹56,100–₹1,77,500 plus Military Service Pay of ₹15,500/month. Adding DA (~50%), Transport Allowance (₹7,200+DA in major cities), free ration, and other allowances, the gross in-hand salary in a peace posting is approximately ₹85,000 to ₹1,05,000 per month. Field area postings add further allowances ranging from ₹1,200 to ₹42,500/month extra.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for UPSC NDA NA II 2026?
Ans: The last date to fill the online application form at https://upsconline.nic.in is 09 June 2026 at 6:00 PM, after which the link will be disabled. No correction, modification, or withdrawal is permitted after submission, so candidates should review all details carefully before clicking submit. The helpdesk (011-24041001) is available 10 AM–5:30 PM on working days during the application window.
Q.3 Is there negative marking in UPSC NDA NA II 2026?
Ans: Yes, there is negative marking. As stated in Appendix-II Para 3 of the official notification, one-third (0.33) of marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer. If more than one option is marked, it counts as a wrong answer and the same 0.33 penalty applies. No penalty is deducted for unattempted questions, so it is better to leave a question blank than guess randomly.
Q.4 What is the age limit for UPSC NDA NA II 2026?
Ans: Both male and female candidates must be unmarried and born not earlier than 01 January 2008 and not later than 01 January 2011. There is no age relaxation for any category — not for OBC, EWS, or any other group. The birth date must exactly match the Matriculation certificate. Candidates currently in 11th class are NOT eligible; only 12th-appearing or 12th-pass students can apply.
Q.5 How to download the UPSC NDA NA II 2026 Notification PDF?
Ans: The official notification PDF (Advt No. 10/2026-NDA-II) is available on UPSC's website at https://upsc.gov.in under 'Examination Notices' or 'What's New'. The complete document covers eligibility conditions, syllabus (Appendix-I), exam instructions (Appendix-II), physical standards (Appendix-III), pay scales, training details, and state scholarships (Appendix-IV).
Q.6 What is the educational qualification for UPSC NDA 2026?
Ans: For Army Wing: 12th Class pass in any stream from a recognised board or university. For Navy Wing, Air Force Wing (all sub-branches), and Naval Academy (INAC): 12th Class pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics is mandatory. Students currently appearing in 12th class may also apply but must produce the 12th pass certificate at SSB interview or submit a self-attested copy by 10 June 2027. Students in 11th class are NOT eligible.
Q.7 What is the selection process for UPSC NDA NA II 2026?
Ans: Selection has three stages: (1) Written Exam on 13/09/2026 — Mathematics (300 marks) + General Ability Test (600 marks); total 900 marks; objective OMR-based; (2) SSB Interview — 900 marks — two stages over 5 days covering Officer Intelligence Rating, Group Tests, Psychology, and Conference; Air Force Flying branch candidates additionally attempt CPSS; (3) Medical Examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers. Final merit is based on combined written + SSB score. Equal marks situation is resolved via written score, then GAT marks, then age seniority.
Q.8 Can candidates who failed CPSS earlier apply for NDA Air Force wing?
Ans: Yes, but only for the Air Force Ground Duty branches (Technical or Non-Technical) — NOT for the Flying branch. CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System) is given only once in a lifetime, and failure makes a candidate permanently ineligible for the Flying branch through any entry route (NDA, AFCAT, NCC). Candidates with glasses (Habitual Wearers) cannot appear for CPSS at all and are automatically considered for Ground Duty if eligible. They must indicate their willingness in the Exam Specific Form.
