Recruitment Note: About State Bank of India (SBI)

State Bank of India (SBI) is India's largest public sector bank and a Fortune 500 company, headquartered in Mumbai. With over 22,000 branches across India and an extensive global presence, SBI commands the largest market share in deposits and advances in the Indian banking sector. It is a statutory body under the State Bank of India Act, 1955, and operates under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. SBI won Gold in 4 categories at the Economic Times Human Capital Awards 2026, including Visionary HR Leader, Excellence in Communication Strategy, Team Building, and Employee Retention. The Apprentice program under NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme) is one of India's largest banking apprenticeship drives, offering practical exposure to retail banking operations across all 34 states and union territories.

Recruitment Note: Job Profile — Apprentice

SBI Apprentices are placed in various bank branches for a one-year training period under the Apprenticeship Act 1961. This is NOT employment in the Bank — apprentices are not treated as employees of SBI and are not entitled to any employee benefits. The training involves observing and assisting regular staff in day-to-day retail banking operations — handling customer queries, basic account servicing, NEFT/RTGS/IMPS transactions, document processing, and learning banking software systems. Apprentices are expected to be regular, punctual, and maintain satisfactory conduct throughout the one-year training period. After successful completion and passing the Skill Evaluation Test (Trade Test), apprentices receive the joint National Apprenticeship Certificate issued by SBI-NSDC/BFSI-SSC.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks — Apprentice Program

The monthly stipend is ₹15,000 (fixed) for the one-year training period. No DA, HRA, TA, or any other allowances are payable. There is no Provident Fund, Pension, Gratuity, or any other service benefit. However, the most significant long-term benefit is the Weightage/Relaxation in SBI Junior Associate (Clerk) Recruitment — apprentices who successfully complete training with satisfactory conduct and performance are given weightage/relaxation in future SBI JA recruitment as per the Bank's recruitment policy. This is a meaningful career advantage for banking aspirants. Upon completion, candidates also receive the National Apprenticeship Certificate from SBI-NSDC/BFSI-SSC. SBI also maintains a State-category wise Wait List for one year and may offer consent form to share apprentice details with SBI's Associates and Subsidiaries for future engagement opportunities.

💡 Expert Tip

Two critical disqualifiers that most candidates miss: (1) If you have previously undergone or are currently pursuing Apprenticeship in SBI or any other organization under the Apprenticeship Act 1961, you are NOT eligible. (2) If you had training or job experience of one year or more after your graduation, you are also NOT eligible. Additionally, SBI checks CIBIL scores — candidates who have defaulted on loan/credit card repayments with any bank or NBFC and haven't cleared dues by the date of the engagement offer will be rejected. Also, NAPS portal registration at apprenticeshipindia.gov.in is mandatory BEFORE applying on the SBI portal — don't skip this step. For the Local Language Test, candidates who have studied the opted language in 10th or 12th standard are exempted — carry that marksheet.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the stipend for SBI Apprentice 2026?
Ans: SBI Apprentices receive a fixed monthly stipend of ₹15,000 for the entire one-year training period as confirmed in the official notification (Section F). No other allowances like DA, HRA, TA, or medical benefits are payable. After successful completion, apprentices get weightage/relaxation in SBI Junior Associate (Clerk) recruitment — which is the real long-term benefit of this program.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for SBI Apprentice 2026?
Ans: The online application window closes on 08 June 2026. The fee must also be paid by this date. Candidates are strongly advised to apply well before the deadline to avoid website congestion. All revisions and corrigenda, if any, will be published only on SBI's website. NAPS portal registration at apprenticeshipindia.gov.in must be completed before applying on the SBI portal.
Q.3 Is there negative marking in SBI Apprentice exam?
Ans: Yes. As confirmed in the official notification, 1/4th of the marks assigned to a question (i.e., 0.25 marks) will be deducted for each wrong answer. With 100 questions of 1 mark each, each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. There are no minimum qualifying marks for individual sections — only the aggregate score matters for the merit list, with SC/ST/OBC/PwBD getting 5% relaxation.
Q.4 What is the age limit for SBI Apprentice 2026?
Ans: Age is reckoned as on 01 April 2026. Minimum age is 20 years and maximum is 28 years for UR/EWS candidates. This means candidates born between 02 April 1998 and 01 April 2006 (both days inclusive) are eligible for UR/EWS. Relaxation: SC/ST — 5 years (max 33); OBC (NCL) — 3 years (max 31); PwBD (UR) — 10 years; PwBD (OBC) — 13 years; PwBD (SC/ST) — 15 years. Ex-servicemen are not eligible.
Q.5 How to apply for SBI Apprentice 2026?
Ans: First, register on the NAPS portal at apprenticeshipindia.gov.in (mandatory). Then visit sbi.bank.in/web/careers/current-openings, click on 'Engagement of Apprentices in SBI', and complete the online application. Upload photograph, signature, left thumb impression, and handwritten declaration. Pay ₹300 (Gen/OBC/EWS) or ₹0 (SC/ST/PwBD) online. You can apply for only one state and appear in the exam only once under this engagement.
Q.6 What is the educational qualification for SBI Apprentice?
Ans: Graduation in any stream from a recognized University/Institute as on 01 April 2026 is the minimum requirement. Importantly, candidates who have had job experience or training of one year or more after completing their graduation are NOT eligible. Also, candidates who have previously undergone Apprenticeship in SBI or any other organization are also not eligible.
Q.7 What is the selection process for SBI Apprentice 2026?
Ans: Selection involves three stages: (1) Online Written Test — 100 objective questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes, with 4 sections of 25 questions each having separate 15-minute timers. Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer applies. (2) Test of Local Language — conducted after qualifying the written test, unless exempted by having studied the language in 10th/12th standard. (3) Medical Examination — engagement is subject to medical fitness as per Bank's requirements.
Q.8 Is SBI Apprentice a permanent government job?
Ans: No. SBI Apprentice is strictly a one-year training program under the Apprenticeship Act 1961 — it is not employment in the Bank, not a contract employment, and apprentices are not treated as SBI employees. SBI has no obligation to offer regular employment after the training period. However, successful completion provides weightage/relaxation in future SBI Junior Associate (Clerk) recruitment and a National Apprenticeship Certificate from SBI-NSDC/BFSI-SSC.
