RRB ALP Recruitment 2026: Apply Online for 11127 Posts

📅 Posted: 15/05/2026 📝 Updated: 15/05/2026
Total Vacancy11127
SalaryLevel-2 (₹19,900–₹63,200) + Running Allowance [Approx. ₹35,000–₹42,000/month in-hand]
LocationAll India
Last Date14/06/2026

Short Information: Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) have released the detailed CEN No. 01/2026 for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) vacancies across all railway zones in India. This is one of the largest railway recruitment drives in recent years — and for good reason. The ALP post sits at Pay Level-2 (₹19,900/month initial basic pay), but what makes it genuinely attractive is the Running Allowance (Mileage Allowance) that loco pilots earn on top of their basic pay. With DA, HRA, and running allowance combined, the effective monthly take-home for a newly appointed ALP easily reaches ₹35,000–₹42,000 per month — comparable to many Level-4 posts without the running allowance.

The qualification requirement is accessible: you need Matriculation (10th pass) plus ITI in trades like Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Diesel Mechanic, and others — or a 3-year Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile Engineering. A full engineering degree is also accepted in lieu of a Diploma.

The application window runs from 15 May 2026 to 14 June 2026 (23:59 hrs). Fee payment last date is 16 June 2026. A modification window is available from 17 June to 26 June 2026 for ₹250 per change. The selection process has three exam stages: CBT-1, CBT-2, and CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test). Crucially, candidates who have undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery are NOT eligible — the A-1 medical standard requires 6/6 unaided vision in both eyes.

Recruitment Note: About Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) & Indian Railways

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) are decentralized recruitment bodies functioning under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, responsible for conducting recruitment to non-gazetted posts in Indian Railways. There are 21 RRBs spread across the country, each catering to specific railway zones. Indian Railways is one of the world's largest railway networks — with over 1.4 lakh km of total track length, carrying approximately 13 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of freight daily. It employs over 12 lakh active personnel, making it India's largest employer. The ALP cadre is a technical operational role that forms the backbone of train operations across all 18 Railway Zones including Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern, Western, and others. Recruitment through CEN (Centralised Employment Notice) is conducted periodically for large-scale nationwide hiring, with strict merit-based selection ensuring transparency. The previous major ALP recruitment — CEN 01/2018 — had filled approximately 26,502 posts, making this 2026 cycle with 11,127 posts a significant but more selective drive.

Recruitment Note: Job Profile — Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)

An Assistant Loco Pilot works directly in the locomotive cab alongside the Loco Pilot (LP), assisting in the operation of trains across Indian Railways. The ALP is responsible for monitoring gauges, signals, and instruments inside the cab; reporting anomalies in track, signals, or equipment to the LP; operating various locomotive controls as directed; and ensuring compliance with all Railway safety rules during duty. The role involves shift duties including night shifts and is physically demanding — requiring sustained concentration, alertness, and excellent vision. ALP postings are on the Zonal Railway where the candidate is first appointed, with no inter-railway transfer right for at least 5–10 years. After accumulating experience and clearing departmental exams, ALPs are promoted to Loco Pilot (Goods) → Loco Pilot (Mail/Express) → Loco Pilot (Passenger) → Senior Loco Pilot, with each grade bringing significantly higher pay and Running Allowance earnings. Running Allowance — also called Mileage Allowance — is calculated based on kilometers operated per month and can contribute ₹10,000–₹20,000 on top of the basic pay, making experienced loco pilots among the highest-paid Group C railway employees.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Salary

Railway employees enjoy one of the most comprehensive government benefit packages in India. ALP appointees receive: Dearness Allowance (DA — revised quarterly), House Rent Allowance (HRA — 8%/16%/24% based on city classification) or Railway quarters, Running Allowance/Mileage Allowance (significant addition for loco pilots based on km operated), Transport Allowance, New Pension Scheme (NPS — Tier I & II), Contributory Health Service (RELHS — medical coverage for self and family at Railway hospitals), Pass facility (free/subsidised railway travel for self and dependents — annual privilege passes + post-retirement passes), Leave Travel Concession (LTC), Children's education allowance, Group Insurance Scheme, Ex-Gratia Gratuity, Performance Related Incentive Scheme (PRIS), and access to Railway sports, cultural facilities, and employee welfare schemes. Free travel authority (sleeper class pass) is also given during examination stages to SC/ST candidates.

Recruitment Note: Important: Marks Normalisation in CBT

Since CBT-1 and CBT-2 are conducted in multiple shifts on multiple days, Railway Recruitment Boards apply normalisation of marks across shifts. Normalisation adjusts for varying difficulty levels across different exam sessions so that no candidate is disadvantaged due to the shift they are allocated. The normalised score (not raw score) is used for shortlisting candidates for subsequent stages. Candidates should be aware that their final shortlisting rank depends on the normalised score — meaning a candidate with a raw score of, say, 55/75 may receive a higher or lower normalised score depending on the overall performance of their shift cohort. RRBs use standard statistical normalisation formulae for this purpose. No candidate can request a change of exam date, shift, or centre once allotted.

💡 Expert Tip

Three things that trip up most RRB ALP 2026 applicants: First, you can only apply to ONE RRB — and once submitted, the chosen RRB cannot be changed even in the modification window. Choose very carefully by checking Annexure-B vacancy distribution before applying. Second, the fee refund (₹400 for Gen/OBC/EWS, ₹250 for SC/ST/Female etc.) is credited ONLY to your Aadhaar-linked bank account — if your bank account is not seeded with Aadhaar, you must link it at NPCI before applying or the refund will be forfeited. Third, at the CBAT stage, you must bring a Self-Screening Medical Declaration Report (Annexure VIII-A & VIII-B) signed by both a General Physician AND an Eye Specialist from a Central/State Government Hospital — private hospital certificates are NOT accepted. Prepare this document well in advance.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the in-hand salary for RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)?
Ans: The ALP post is in Pay Level-2 with an initial basic pay of ₹19,900/month. However, the total monthly earnings are significantly higher due to Running Allowance (Mileage Allowance) — which varies based on kilometres operated per month. After adding DA, HRA, and Running Allowance, a newly appointed ALP typically takes home approximately ₹35,000 to ₹42,000 per month. With experience and higher locomotive grades, loco pilots can earn well above ₹60,000/month.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for RRB ALP 2026?
