Recruitment Note: About Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. (KSEB)

Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. (KSEB) is the principal power utility of the state of Kerala, responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity across the state. Established originally in 1957 under the Electricity (Supply) Act, KSEB was later reconstituted as a Limited Company (KSEB Ltd.) in 2013 as per the Government of Kerala's restructuring plan. KSEB serves over 1.3 crore consumers across Kerala's 14 districts and manages thousands of substations, distribution lines, and generation plants including major hydroelectric projects like Idukki, Sabarigiri, and Pallivasal.

KSEB is known for its high electricity access rate — Kerala has one of the highest household electrification rates in India. The utility plays a central role in Kerala's infrastructure development and disaster resilience. KSEB recruits through Kerala Public Service Commission for entry-level technical posts like Electricity Worker, ensuring transparent and merit-based selection. Working in KSEB offers long-term job security, state government service benefits, and exposure to Kerala's growing renewable energy initiatives.

Recruitment Note: Job Profile — Electricity Worker (KSEB)

An Electricity Worker in KSEB is a front-line field technician responsible for the operation and maintenance of Kerala's electrical distribution network. Day-to-day work involves erecting and maintaining electric poles, stringing and repairing overhead transmission lines, attending to consumer fault complaints, connecting and disconnecting service connections, and maintaining distribution substations and transformers at the local level.

The role is primarily outdoor and physically demanding — requiring pole-climbing skills (hence the mandatory 9m pole climbing test) and work in all weather conditions. Electricity Workers work in shifts and may be deployed for emergency restoration during floods, storms, or other disasters — a regular occurrence in Kerala. Reporting is to the Section Engineer or Junior Engineer at the sub-section level. Career progression follows the KSEB promotion ladder — from Electricity Worker to Line Man, Sub Engineer, and beyond — based on seniority, departmental exams, and vacancies. Postings are strictly district-based for the first five years with no transfer allowed.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Salary

As a Kerala State Government / KSEB Ltd. employee, an Electricity Worker receives substantial benefits beyond the base pay of ₹24,400–₹43,600. These include Dearness Allowance (DA) revised periodically, House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per posting location, medical benefits for self and dependents under the Government Medical Insurance Scheme, Leave Travel Concession (LTC), and Children's Education Allowance. Retirement benefits include Provident Fund, Gratuity, and Pension under the relevant Kerala Government scheme. KSEB employees are also entitled to uniform allowance, night shift allowance (where applicable), hazard pay for high-risk field work, festival allowance, and earned/medical/casual leave as per service rules. Annual pay increments ensure salary grows significantly over a career spanning 30+ years.

Recruitment Note: Special Rules — Idukki, Wayanad & Kasaragod Districts

Candidates who apply for and are appointed from the ranked lists of Idukki, Wayanad, or Kasaragod districts are subject to special transfer restrictions as per G.O(Ms) No. 6/2026/P&ARD dated 22.01.2026. Working arrangement, deputation, transfer, and mutual transfer will NOT be permitted for at least 10 years from the date of joining. Even after 10 years, promotions will be limited to within these districts only. Candidates applying for these districts should carefully evaluate the long-term implications before selecting them, as the posting is effectively a long-term commitment to these districts.

💡 Expert Tip

Two critical traps in Kerala PSC district-wise selections: First, apply to ONLY ONE district — if you submit applications for more than one district, ALL your applications will be rejected and disciplinary action will be taken. There is no exception to this rule. Second, the pole-climbing practical test (9m pole within 8 minutes) is a hard disqualification — produce the Medical Certificate from a Government doctor of at least Assistant Surgeon rank at the time of certificate verification. If you're applying for Idukki, Wayanad, or Kasaragod districts, be aware that working arrangement, deputation, and transfer are NOT allowed for at least 10 years after joining, and promotions too will be limited to those districts only.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the in-hand salary for Electricity Worker in KSEB?
Ans: The pay scale is ₹24,400 – ₹43,600 per month. At entry level, basic pay starts at ₹24,400. After adding DA (approximately 40–46% of basic for Kerala government employees), HRA, and other allowances, the estimated gross in-hand salary for a new Electricity Worker is approximately ₹38,000 to ₹44,000 per month. With annual increments, the salary grows significantly over the years. Additionally, night shift allowance, uniform allowance, and hazard pay add further to the take-home.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for KSEB Electricity Worker Recruitment 2026?
Ans: The last date to submit the online application through Kerala PSC OTR portal (www.keralapsc.gov.in) is 03 June 2026 (Wednesday) up to 12 midnight. There is no application fee. Apply to only ONE district — multiple district applications will result in rejection of all applications. Candidates are advised to apply early to avoid last-minute OTR portal issues.
Q.3 Is there any negative marking in the Kerala PSC Electricity Worker exam?
Ans: No negative marking has been mentioned in the official notification (Category No. 21/2026). Based on standard Kerala PSC exam pattern, the written test is OMR-based with objective questions covering Electrical Trade Theory, General Science, General Knowledge, and Mathematics. However, Kerala PSC does mention negative marking in some of its other notifications — check the official Examination Programme when published for any such update specific to this selection.
Q.4 What is the age limit for KSEB Electricity Worker recruitment?
Ans: The age limit is 18 to 40 years. Only candidates born between 02 January 1986 and 01 January 2008 (both dates inclusive) are eligible. Age relaxation is available for SC, ST, and OBC candidates as per Kerala Government norms, subject to the absolute maximum age limit of 50 years in any case. For other special categories, refer to Part II General Conditions of the Gazette Notification.
Q.5 How to download the Kerala PSC KSEB Electricity Worker Notification PDF?
Ans: Visit www.keralapsc.gov.in and navigate to the Notifications section. Search for Category No. 21/2026 (Gazette Date: 30 April 2026) for the post of Electricity Worker in Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. The notification is available in both English and Malayalam on the Kerala PSC website. You can apply directly through your OTR profile by clicking 'Apply Now' against this category.

(2) A Government-approved 2-year National Trade Certificate (NTC) or State Trade Certificate (STC) in Electrician or Wireman trade. Additionally, physical fitness is mandatory — candidates must meet height standards and must be able to climb and descend a 9-metre electric pole within 8 minutes. A Medical Certificate from a Government doctor (minimum rank: Assistant Surgeon) is required.
Q.7 What is the selection process for KSEB Electricity Worker Recruitment 2026?
Ans: The selection process involves: (1) Online application through Kerala PSC OTR portal. (2) Written/OMR/Online Test (if conducted) — objective questions on Electrical Theory, GK, Science, and Maths. Candidates must submit exam confirmation through their OTR profile. (3) Pole Climbing Practical Test — must climb and descend a 9m electric pole within 8 minutes. (4) Certificate Verification — original documents including Medical Certificate. (5) District-wise Ranked List publication — valid for 1 to 3 years.
Q.8 Can a candidate apply for more than one district in KSEB Electricity Worker Recruitment?
Ans: Absolutely NOT. Candidates must apply to only one district. If applications are submitted for more than one district, all applications will be summarily rejected and disciplinary action will be taken as per Rule 22 of Kerala PSC Rules of Procedure 1976. This could include disqualification from future Kerala PSC exams, invalidation of answer scripts, or even criminal proceedings. Select your preferred district carefully before submitting — the application cannot be altered after final submission.
