Recruitment Note: About Karnataka Agriculture Department & KEA

The Karnataka Agriculture Department is one of the largest state government departments in Karnataka, responsible for improving agricultural productivity, rural development, and farmer welfare across the state. With Karnataka having over 1.24 crore farm holdings, the department plays a central role in implementing central and state government schemes including PM-KISAN, Raita Samparka Kendras, and various crop insurance and irrigation programs. Agriculture Officers and Assistant Agriculture Officers are the frontline government representatives who interact directly with farmers at the taluk and hobli level, providing technical guidance on crop selection, fertilizer use, pest management, and government scheme enrollment. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), established under the Karnataka Public Services (Regulation of Transfers and Prevention of Delay in Discharge of Duties) Act, conducts recruitment for Group-B and Group-C posts in various state government departments. KEA is headquartered in Bangalore and handles recruitment for thousands of posts annually across Karnataka.

Recruitment Note: Job Profile — Agriculture Officer & Assistant Agriculture Officer

Agriculture Officers (Krishi Adhikari) work at the taluk/block level under the District Agriculture Officer, providing technical support to farmers and implementing state government agricultural schemes. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting field visits to assess crop conditions, distributing seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides under subsidized government schemes, maintaining land records and crop survey data, organizing farmer training programs (Kisan Melas, demo plots), and coordinating with Krishi Vigyan Kendras. Assistant Agriculture Officers (Sahayaka Krishi Adhikari) are typically posted at the hobli or village level and serve as the first point of contact between the government and farmers. They collect real-time crop data, verify applications for government benefits, conduct awareness drives, and report field-level issues to senior officers. Both posts involve significant fieldwork, often in rural and semi-urban areas, and require knowledge of Kannada for effective farmer communication.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Salary

As regular Group-B Karnataka State Government employees, Agriculture Officers and Assistant Agriculture Officers receive a comprehensive benefits package: Dearness Allowance (DA) revised twice yearly, House Rent Allowance (HRA) based on posting location, Travel Allowance (TA) and Daily Allowance (DA) for field visits, Medical Allowance for self and dependents under the Karnataka Government Employees Health Scheme (KGEHS), National Pension System (NPS) with employer contribution, annual increment as per the 2024 Revised Pay Matrix, Leave Travel Concession (LTC), Earned Leave (30 days/year), Medical Leave, Maternity/Paternity Leave, Children's Education Allowance, Festival Advance, and access to government quarters where available. A 2-year probation period is standard, after which employees are confirmed in service. The National Pension Scheme (NPS) covers retirement benefits with government contribution of 10% of Basic + DA. Employees also benefit from the Karnataka Government Group Insurance Scheme.

Recruitment Note: Kalyana Karnataka (KK) Region — Article 371(J) Reservation

The Kalyana Karnataka region (formerly Hyderabad-Karnataka) comprises the districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary (Ballari), and Vijayanagara. Under Article 371(J) of the Indian Constitution, introduced by the 98th Constitutional Amendment Act, persons who are local to this region get preferential reservation in educational institutions and appointments to state government posts in this region. Candidates applying for KK roster posts must be local persons of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region as defined under the Karnataka Public Services (Reservation for Local Persons in the Hyderabad-Karnataka Region) Act, 2013. The required eligibility certificate (Annexure-2) must be obtained from the competent authority (Sub-Division level Assistant Commissioner's office). Note that SC/ST/OBC certificates issued for KK roster purposes must be specific to the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

💡 Expert Tip

A very important detail most candidates miss: Agriculture Officers applying for BOTH Sl.85-rate posts AND Sl.15-rate posts must submit only ONE application. However, they need to pay an additional ₹100 fee for each extra post beyond the first one within the same exam cycle. If you appear for both the RPC and KK exams, they are on DIFFERENT dates — RPC Paper-1/2 on 26 July 2026 and KK Paper-1/2 on 25 July 2026. Check which roster your district falls under before applying. The Mandatory Kannada Language Test requires a minimum of 50 marks out of 150 — rural/remote area candidates are exempt from this cut-off requirement. If your qualifying degree result is awaited, you CANNOT apply — the degree must be obtained by the last application date.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the in-hand salary for Agriculture Officer in Karnataka?

After adding current DA and House Rent Allowance, the starting in-hand salary is approximately ₹90,000–₹95,000 per month. Applications must be submitted online only through the KEA portal at https://cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/. Once submitted, no changes are allowed, so candidates should fill the form carefully and verify all details before final submission.
Q.3 Is there any negative marking in the Karnataka Agriculture Officer exam?
Ans: Yes, there is negative marking. In the Offline OMR-based competitive exam, each wrong answer results in a deduction of 0.75 marks. Each question carries 1 mark, and 4 options are provided. Candidates should not attempt a question unless reasonably confident. Additionally, in the OMR sheet, if a candidate shades an answer and then tries to cancel or change it after the 5th question, every subsequent modified answer will also be deducted 0.75 marks, even if shaded correctly.
Q.4 What is the age limit for General and OBC category candidates?
Ans: For General Merit (GM) candidates: Maximum age is 40 years as on the last date of application (20 June 2026). For Category-2A, 2B, 3A, and 3B (OBC equivalent in Karnataka): Maximum age is 43 years. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Category-1 candidates: Maximum age is 45 years. For Sl.15 rate posts: Eligible degrees include B.Tech (Food Science & Technology), B.Tech (Food Technology), BSc (Agricultural Marketing & Cooperation), BSc (Agri Business Management), BSc (Agri Biotechnology), BSc (Agricultural Engineering), or B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering). The degree must be obtained before the last application date — awaited results are not accepted.

Minimum qualifying marks are 35 out of 300 per paper. Second, a Mandatory Kannada Language Test is conducted separately — it is qualifying only (minimum 50 marks out of 150 required), and marks are not added to merit. Final merit is based solely on the written exam marks. There is no interview.
Q.8 What is the difference between RPC and KK roster for this recruitment?
Ans: Two separate notifications have been issued: RPC (Regular Promotion Cadre) with 670 vacancies covers the general Karnataka roster and is open to all eligible Karnataka candidates. The KK (Kalyana Karnataka) roster with 257 vacancies is specifically for the Hyderabad-Karnataka region (Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Vijayanagara districts) under Article 371(J). The exam dates differ — RPC exam is on 26 July 2026 and KK exam is on 25 July 2026. Eligible candidates from Kalyana Karnataka may apply for both, but separately.
