Its primary mandate is to develop and maintain road infrastructure in India's border areas and friendly foreign countries, ensuring strategic connectivity for the Indian Armed Forces. Operating in some of the world's most challenging terrains — from the Himalayas at altitudes exceeding 19,000 feet to the dense forests of the Northeast — BRO manages over 61,000 km of roads and approximately 900 bridges across 19 states and 3 Union Territories.

BRO operates through the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), its civilian workforce component. GREF personnel are deployed in Projects/Units spread across Northern and Eastern Regions of India and can be posted anywhere in the country. As of recent data, BRO has constructed landmark projects including the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang), the Sela Tunnel (Arunachal Pradesh), and multiple strategic roads along the LAC and LoC. The organisation plays a critical role in national defence infrastructure and disaster relief, making GREF positions among the most prestigious defence-linked civilian jobs in India.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Salary

💡 Expert Tip

This recruitment uses a weightage system that many candidates overlook. If your father is a serving/retired GREF personnel, you get a flat 15% added to your academic marks for call letter shortlisting — same as serving GREF staff applying for higher posts. NCC 'C' Certificate holders get 10% weightage. If you hold both NCC 'B' and 'C', only the 'C' certificate marks count. Casual Paid Labour (CPL) of GREF with 179+ days of service in the last year gets 10% weightage. Critically, this weightage is ONLY for written exam call letter shortlisting — it does NOT apply to final merit. Your final rank depends entirely on written exam marks, subject to qualifying PET and Trade Test. Missing your left thumb impression on the application will get it rejected outright — no communication is sent for rejected applications.

Q.5 How to download the BRO GREF Notification PDF and Application Form?
Ans: The official notification, detailed instructions, application form, and admit card format are all available at www.bro.gov.in. Download the application form and print it on A4 size 75 GSM bond paper using one side only. The admit card must be printed on both sides of a single paper.
