Recruitment Note: About SAIL — DSP, ISP & ASP

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is India's largest steel-making company and a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel. Established in 1973, SAIL operates five integrated steel plants, three special steel plants, and one subsidiary. Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), established in 1959 with British collaboration, is one of India's first public sector steel plants producing structural sections, skelp, plates, and railway products. IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) at Burnpur, one of the oldest steel plants in Asia (est. 1919), was modernised by SAIL with a state-of-the-art 2.5 MTPA expansion. Alloy Steels Plant (ASP) at Durgapur, established in 1964, specialises in high-quality alloy and special steels for defence, aerospace, and engineering industries. All three plants are located in West Bengal and collectively form a major industrial hub in eastern India, offering professionals hands-on exposure to complex steel manufacturing environments.

Recruitment Note: Nature of Engagement & Important Conditions

This engagement is purely temporary on 'Contract for Service' basis — it does NOT create any employer-employee relationship and carries no right to regular appointment. The initial tenure is 3 years, extendable to a maximum of 5 years (one year at a time) based on performance and company discretion. During the first 6 months, either party can terminate with just 7 days' notice and no notice pay. Beyond 6 months, 1 month's notice or one month's retainership fee is required for termination. Annual performance review determines increment rate (4%/7%/10%). No PF, Pension, Gratuity, LTC, PRP, or terminal/service benefits are payable. In case of injury, illness or death during engagement, neither the candidate nor family members are entitled to any compensation from SAIL.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Retainership

Despite being a contract role, SAIL provides meaningful benefits. Outstation candidates get company accommodation (2BHK) at a nominal rent of just ₹3,000/month — a significant saving given Durgapur/Burnpur rental markets. Free OPD and IPD medical treatment at SAIL's company-owned hospitals for self, spouse, and two dependent children is another standout perk. Mobile/broadband expenses are reimbursed up to ₹800–₹1,200/month. Self-insurance (medical/life/health/accident) premiums are reimbursed up to ₹20,000–₹30,000/year. For official travel, YP-2 and YP-3 are entitled to air travel (economy class) for distances over 500 km. Joining travel is fully reimbursed (rail or air as applicable). Initial 3 months, transit accommodation at SAIL Guest House is available at ₹200/day.

💡 Expert Tip

SAIL shortlists when applications exceed 5 times the requirement — in that case, a CBT is held (80% weightage) followed by Interview (20%). For popular roles like Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical YP-1 posts, expect a CBT. Brush up on your domain fundamentals plus Steel Plant-specific operations. One critical document often missed: if you're working in a PSU/Govt Dept/Autonomous Body, an NOC from your employer is mandatory at the Interview stage — arrange it in advance. Also, SAIL explicitly states candidates should ideally apply for only one engagement since CBTs for multiple roles may clash on the same date. Choose your strongest profile and focus on that application.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the in-hand salary for Young Professional YP-2 at SAIL?
Ans: YP-2 receives a consolidated retainership fee of ₹1,00,000 per month. This is all-inclusive — there are no additional allowances like DA or HRA. However, SAIL provides free company accommodation at ₹3,000/month rent (saving ₹15,000–₹20,000 in rent), free hospital facilities, ₹1,000/month mobile reimbursement, and up to ₹25,000/year insurance reimbursement — making the effective value closer to ₹1,15,000–₹1,20,000/month.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for SAIL Young Professionals Recruitment 2026?
Ans: The last date to submit the online application and pay the ₹500 registration fee is 06 June 2026. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Candidates are advised to apply well before the deadline to avoid website congestion on the last day.
Q.3 Is there any negative marking in the SAIL YP CBT exam?
Ans: No negative marking is mentioned in the official notification (Advt. No. ISP/YP/2026/01). The CBT is conducted only if applications exceed 5 times the vacancies. The CBT carries 80% weightage and the personal interview carries 20% weightage in the final merit list. Exact question pattern and marking scheme will be announced if CBT is scheduled.
Q.4 What is the age limit for SAIL Young Professionals 2026?
Ans: Minimum age is 23 years for all categories. Maximum age is 35 years for YP-1 posts, 38 years for YP-2 posts, and 42 years for YP-3 posts (only P-6C — Projects Civil), all as on the closing date 06 June 2026. No SC/ST/OBC/EWS age relaxation is mentioned in the official notification for this contract engagement.
Q.5 How to download the SAIL Young Professionals Notification PDF?
Ans: The official notification (Advt. No. ISP/YP/2026/01, dated 22 May 2026) is available on the SAIL website at www.sail.co.in under the Careers section. You can also find it at sailcareers.com. Any corrigendum or addendum, if issued, will also be published exclusively on www.sail.co.in.
Q.6 What is the educational qualification for SAIL Young Professionals?
Ans: B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent in the relevant discipline with minimum 65% marks (Regular/Full-time from a Govt. recognised University/Institution) is mandatory for all engagement codes. Post-qualification work experience in the relevant field is also mandatory — 3 years for YP-1, 6 years for YP-2, and 10 years for YP-3. Desirable qualifications include M.E./M.Tech./Ph.D. in the relevant discipline.
Q.7 What is the selection process for SAIL Young Professionals 2026?
Ans: Applications are first screened for eligibility. If applications exceed 5 times the vacancies, a CBT/Aptitude/Psychometric Test is held (80% weightage) followed by a personal interview (20% weightage). If applications are fewer, all eligible candidates are directly called for interview. Final merit is based on CBT + Interview scores. Pre-employment medical fitness is mandatory before joining.
Q.8 Is the SAIL Young Professionals position a permanent government job?
Ans: No. This is a fixed-term contract engagement on 'Contract for Service' basis, not a permanent appointment. The initial tenure is 3 years, extendable up to 5 years maximum. It does not create any employer-employee relationship and carries no entitlement to PF, Pension, Gratuity, or regular government service benefits. SAIL explicitly states this engagement does not confer any right to regular appointment on any grounds whatsoever.
