LocationAll India
Last Date11/07/2026

Short Information: The Indian Space Research Organisation's U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) in Bengaluru has opened applications for 16 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions under Advt. No. URSC:02:2026. This is a research fellowship — not a regular job — but for M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc (Engg.) graduates looking to work on cutting-edge spacecraft technologies, it is one of the most sought-after research engagements in India's space sector.

The fellowship pays ₹37,000 per month as JRF, with a potential increase to ₹42,000 per month as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) after two years. On top of that, HRA is paid if hostel accommodation is not provided, and medical benefits for self are also applicable — making the effective take-home quite competitive for a research role.

Positions span Electronics, Computer Science, Power Electronics, Optics, Mechanical, and Thermal Engineering domains. The key eligibility requirement is a First Class postgraduate degree (M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc Engg.) with minimum 60% or 6.5 CGPA, combined with a qualifying score in GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, or equivalent national-level exams. Without a valid GATE/NET score, you cannot apply — this is a hard requirement.

Applications are accepted online only from 12 June 2026 to 11 July 2026 via the ISRO website. JRFs can also register for a Ph.D. with an external university, which adds significant academic value to this engagement.

Recruitment Note: About ISRO — U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC)

U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), formerly known as ISAC, is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and serves as ISRO's lead centre for satellite technology. Over four decades, URSC has built the Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system — one of Asia-Pacific's largest domestic communication satellite networks — and the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) system, one of the world's largest earth observation satellite constellations. The centre has been central to landmark missions including Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-3, Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), Aditya-L1, and AstroSat. It also manages the NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) regional positioning system. URSC is responsible for the conceptualization, design, development, fabrication, testing, launch, and in-orbit management of spacecraft. It actively develops cutting-edge technologies in areas like microelectronics packaging, optics, VLSI, thermal systems, and AI/ML integration for space applications.

Recruitment Note: Fellowship Terms & Important Conditions

The JRF engagement is initially for two years, extendable based on work assessment and project needs, up to a maximum of five years (JRF + SRF combined). The JRF position does not confer any right or claim for regular employment in URSC or any ISRO/DOS centre. Upgrade to SRF is solely at ISRO/DOS/URSC's discretion after two years. JRFs are eligible only for casual leave; female JRFs receive maternity leave as per GoI instructions. No DA is payable. JRFs are not entitled to any other benefits applicable to regular employees, but are eligible for subsidised canteen facilities.

Recruitment Note: Benefits & Perks Beyond Stipend

HRA is paid at prescribed rates if hostel accommodation is not provided at the posting location. Medical benefits for self are admissible as per extant rules. JRFs with research aptitude are encouraged to register for a Ph.D. with an external university — this is a significant academic benefit not available in most other research fellowships. Outstation candidates called for interview are reimbursed second-class sleeper railway fare or equivalent (on production of journey proof), subject to successful document verification at interview.

💡 Expert Tip

Your GATE or CSIR-UGC NET score is the single most critical document for this application — without it, your form will be rejected outright. URSC shortlists candidates based on academic performance and GATE/NET percentile, not just eligibility. Candidates with higher GATE scores in relevant disciplines (ECE, CS, ME) have a significantly better chance of being called for interview. Also note: students awaiting final results are NOT eligible — the degree must be already completed as of 11 July 2026. If you are currently employed in a Central/State Govt. or PSU, submit your NOC from your employer after the online application — failing to do so will disqualify you.

Common Questions (FAQs)

Q.1 What is the stipend for ISRO URSC JRF 2026?
Ans: The fellowship stipend for JRF is ₹37,000 per month. After two years, based on URSC's assessment, it may be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) with a stipend of ₹42,000 per month. In addition, HRA is paid at prescribed rates if hostel accommodation is not provided, and medical benefits for self are admissible — making the effective monthly income higher than the base stipend.
Q.2 What is the last date to apply for ISRO URSC JRF 2026?
Ans: The last date to submit the online application is 11 July 2026. This date also serves as the cut-off for determining age, qualification, and all other eligibility criteria. Applications are accepted only through the ISRO website (www.isro.gov.in) under the CAREERS section. No offline or postal applications will be entertained.
Q.3 Is GATE or NET mandatory for ISRO URSC JRF 2026?
Ans: Yes, qualifying in GATE, CSIR-UGC NET (including Lectureship), JAM, JEST, or an equivalent national-level examination conducted by DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER, NISER, etc. is mandatory. Candidates who do not hold a valid qualifying score in one of these exams are not eligible to apply. There is no written examination conducted by URSC — selection is through initial screening and an interview.
Q.4 What is the age limit for ISRO URSC JRF 2026?
Ans: The maximum age limit is 28 years as on 11 July 2026 (the closing date). Age relaxation of 5 years is available for SC/ST candidates, and 3 years for OBC candidates. PwBD candidates, Ex-Servicemen, Widows, and Divorced/judicially separated women receive age relaxation as per Government of India orders.
Q.5 How to download the ISRO URSC JRF 2026 notification PDF?
Ans: Visit the official ISRO website at www.isro.gov.in and navigate to the CAREERS section. Look for advertisement number URSC:02:2026 dated June 12, 2026. The bilingual (Hindi + English) notification PDF is available for download directly from the careers page. You can also check the TopOnlineForm notification link above for a direct download.
Q.6 What is the educational qualification required for ISRO URSC JRF?
Ans: For most positions (JRF-E1 to E12, JRF-M1 to M3): M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc (Engg.) in the relevant discipline with First Class and minimum 60% aggregate or CGPA 6.5/10. For JRF-E13: M.Sc in Mathematics/Physics with minimum 65% (all semesters average) or CGPA 6.84/10, OR M.Tech in Aerospace with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.5/10. Degrees obtained through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) are not accepted.
Q.7 What is the selection process for ISRO URSC JRF 2026?
Ans: There is no written examination. URSC first screens all applications based on academic performance and GATE/NET/equivalent scores. Only shortlisted candidates are called for an Interview held in Bengaluru. Call letters are sent exclusively by e-mail — no postal letters. The final result is published on the ISRO website. The JRF position does not lead to regular employment in ISRO/URSC.
Q.8 Is ISRO URSC JRF a permanent government job?
Ans: No. The JRF position at URSC is a research fellowship engagement, not a regular or permanent government job. The initial term is two years, extendable to a maximum of five years (JRF + SRF combined). It does not confer any claim or right to regular appointment in URSC or any ISRO/DOS centre. However, JRFs are encouraged to pursue a Ph.D. with external university registration during their fellowship, which significantly enhances future career prospects in research and academia.
